The Law School prints its own announcements/invitations for Convocation at no cost to the students. Each graduate gets 15 announcements. Extras are available on first come first served basis.2.

    2. When will the announcements be available?
    [top]

Generally around the first part of March. Watch SCOOPS and e-mails.Will pictures be taken? [top]

Yes. An outside company takes a picture of each graduate as they walk across the stage and then stop to shake hands with Dean Schwab. These photos are available through the company for a price. The company corresponds directly with graduates. For more information about the photographer and pictures, click here.

3, What about mobility impaired accessibility? [top]

Newman Arena in Bartels Hall is handicapped accessible with floor space reserved for wheelchairs and persons who cannot maneuver the stadiium seating.

4. Handicap parking: [top]

In order to park in designated "handicapped" parking spaces during Convocation weekend (Saturday and/orSunday) you need a state-issued permit or handicap symbol on your license plate. If you do not have either one, you need to contact Transportation Services at 607-255-4600 and mention "The Law School Convocation" to obtain the necessary permit. If, however, you will be on campus Thursday and/or Friday, you will need to arrange for a Cornell-issued handicap parking permit in addition to the state-issued parking permit. Pleae follow same instructions as above. This needs to be finalized no later than May 1.

During the ceremony, the parking area to the right of Bartels will be designated for "mobility impaired" parking. You do not need a state-issued permit or handicap symbol on your license plate to park in this area. However, the parking lot will be monitered by a life-safety officer to ensure that the spaces will be available to only those with mobility impaired needs for drivers and/or their passengers. In addition, mobility impaired passengers can be dropped off directly in front of Bartels while the driver parks.

5. How do I order my cap & gown? [top]

The ceremony begins with a processional into Newman Arena by the graduating class followed by members of the faculty. The ceremony is conducted by the Dean of the Law School. A brief speech is given by an LLM and JD student selected by the graduating class, followed by a professor also selected by the class, followed by the presentation of the graduates. Each graduate's name is called and they walk across the stage to shake the hands of the Dean.. The ceremony lasts about an hour and a half.

12. Do we need tickets for the Sunday Ceremony? [top]

No. Admission is first come first served. There are, however, plenty of seats to accommodate everyone.

13. Is there an age requirement? [top]

No. Children, babies, infants, toddlers are most welcomed.

14. What is the difference between Convocation and University Commencement?
[top]

Because many students need to leave the area directly following the conclusion of Law School finals to attend bar review courses, "Convocation" is the Law School's primary event and takes place two weeks prior to University Commencement--which is when the students officially graduate. We do, however, encourage students who will still be in the area to participate in University Commencement. Students who do so are allowed to keep their caps and gown for an extended two week period. We also provide a champagne reception in the Atrium of Myron Taylor Hall. Family and friends are also invited to attend.

15. When do I receive my diploma? [top]

Students do not receive their diplomas at Convocation or Commencement. They are available in the Registrar's office the Tuesday following Memorial Day. The diplomas can either be picked from the Registrar's Office or they will be mailed to all non-Ithaca addresses beginning Monday, June 12th.
